The Gondole is one of Cartier’s quintessential shapes originating in the 1970’s. It is celebrated for its bold and funky, yet classic design elements that define Cartier’s reputation as the maker of shapes. The Gondole shape is seldom seen to begin with and most were produced in the “Jumbo” or “Mini” sizes, both with manual winding movements. However, this Gondole takes rarity to another level as this “Mid-sized” Gondole is the rarest of the sizes and on top of that it features an automatic movement, making this a Gondole Automatique. Cartier collectors know that these automatic movement watches are amongst the rarest of Cartier productions during this time period. Making this Gondole even rarer is the fact that it is cased in white gold. Almost all Gondole Jumbos and Minis that have come to market are in yellow gold, with only a few examples that have been seen in white gold. Dial: There are a few minimal signs of wear that are thankfully difficult to pick up with the naked eye. As with most lacquer dials from there 70s, there is some crazing in the finish that's visible in the macro photography. Nothing has chipped off. Overall, the dial is very well preserved for a piece of this era. Hands: Are matching. Case: Shows some signs of wear but remains thick and even. All markings are deep and clearly visible.
