Universal Genève Compax 22703 w/GF Bracelet

Universal Genève were one of the many brands to give way to the quartz crisis but their quality and rich history have kept vintage watch collectors attention decades later. Arguably best known for their Compax chronographs - notably worn by Eric Clapton and Nina Rindt as well as their Polerouter - a Gérald Genta design at the young age of just 23, UG timepieces saw notable usage as tools and on the wrists of celebrated figures. Today, Breitling's acquisition and revival of the brand in '23 is bringing back more attention to the deeper cut brand that vintage enthusiasts love so much.
On offer is a beautiful Compax chronograph ref. 22703, circa mid '60s that was featured in a Hodinkee article/video with Matt Fisher. It features an overside 40mm case, light silver sunburst dial, black rotating bezel and is paired to a comfortable Gay Freres bracelet, signed UG. This piece has remained in lovely vintage condition. The dial has a small dent near the applied U but it is not distracting. All of the luminous plots remain intact and cleanly aged. The bezel has honest wear but remains well preserved for its age. The case has been lightly polished but retains thick, evenly proportioned lugs. Notably the serial/ref. numbers are still visible under a loupe which is very desirable for UG collectors. The bracelet shows light stretch, fitting an approximate 7.5 inch wrist. For anyone looking for an oversized vintage chronograph, this is seldom seen UG offers great character both on bracelet and a myriad of strap options.
