Universal Genève Monodatic 100101 - 18k Pink Gold

Universal Genève were one of the many brands to give way to the quartz crisis but their quality and rich history have kept vintage watch collectors attention decades later. Arguably best known for their Compax chronographs - notably worn by Eric Clapton and Nina Rindt as well as their Polerouter - a Gérald Genta design at the young age of just 23, UG timepieces saw notable usage as tools and on the wrists of celebrated figures. Today, Breitling's acquisition and revival of the brand in '23 is bringing back more attention to the deeper cut brand that vintage enthusiasts love so much.
On offer is a beautiful Monodatic dress watch ref. 10010, housed in 18k pink gold, circa 1950s with an enticing two tone dial. This model is noteworthy for being the first UG to feature a date complication to compete with the Rolex Datejust. It houses the well-regarded 138 C bumper automatic movement which pre-dates the Polerouter. Interestingly, most Monodatics are not Chronometers but what we have here is a rare example with "Chronomètre" text and being in precious metal we believe it to be very seldom seen find. This example has remained in lovely vintage condition with a sharp, well-defined case retaining strong hallmarks. The serial/ref. numbers are also still clearly legible. The dial is in honest condition with some light service wear but still presents very well overall considering its age. For those in search of a distinctive dress watch, this piece represents a rare chapter in UG’s history, offering a refined and elegant presence on the wrist.
