The UG Polerouter made a lasting mark in horology with its romantic ties to aviation. Introduced in 1954, the model was released in partnership with Scandinavian Airline System (SAS), with the goal of creating a timepiece that was resistant to higher magnetism experienced in the North and South Poles. The Polerouter is also coveted for being a Gérald Genta design and at only 24 years old at the time, it is considered his first great contribution to horology. Genta would go on to design two of the most iconic pieces of the 20th century with the Nautilus and Royal Oak and more. Today, collectors are coveting the Polerouter as much as ever with the recent release of the Polerouter book in late '23. It was also around this time that the news of Breitling acquiring UG broke, which many collectors hope will further invigorate appreciation for the brand with its re-inception. 

This steel example on offer boasts a stunning and well-preserved "tropical gilt" dial, offering tones of "milk chocolate" in direct light. This pieces houses a high-grade micro-rotor caliber 218-2 that just came back from a full service. Remaining in excellent vintage condition, this example boasts a strong case with sharp and well-defined lugs. Notably, the caseback retains all of its serial and reference numbers–a crucial part of finding a strong example. Its becoming harder each year to find well-preserved UGs and we're thrilled to offer this lovely piece in the shop that we know will find its way to the home of a true collector. 

Dial: Has taken a lovely "tropical" patina that looks like "milk chocolate" in direct light. All the the radium plots remain intact and its aging is consistent throughout. All of the gilt lettering remains very legible and warm, making it a very attractive example. Hands: Are matching. Case: Very sharp with original chamfers still visible. Normal signs of use consistent with age. The caseback still has deep and crisp markings. Reference and serial are still clearly visible which is rare and desirable for UG collectors. Correct signed crown. Crystal: Is likely not correct but is signed UG. There is some cracking in the upper middle portion but we've opted to leave it as is for the next custodian to decide. A fresh crystal could be added and this set aside at a later date. Bracelet: Two piece and supple pebbled leather strap in red/brown.
