The Rolex Explorer was first introduced in 1953 and is notable for its association with adventure. The design emphasizes durability, reliability, and legibility in extreme conditions. It features a beautifully simple and balanced dial, luminous hour markers, and a robust stainless steel case. The watch is also equipped with Rolex's patented Oyster case technology, which provides exceptional water resistance and protection from dust and other environmental hazards. The Explorer has been worn on notable expeditions and adventures and has become a symbol of Rolex's commitment to quality and reliability in extreme conditions, and has earned a top spot in the list of Rolex's iconic models. The ref. 1016 was the longest running in the model line ('60-'89) and is coveted by collectors today for its pure design. Of all vintage Rolex, it might just be their most beautiful no-frills creation.
This particular 216X serial example, circa 1969 is a matte iteration with Mk1 "Frog Foot" dial. Collectors affectionately refer to this dial as such due to the Rolex logo in this era resembling just that. This piece remains in excellent vintage condition with a beautifully aged dial, displaying very well-preserved lume. It remains puffy, cleanly aged and has taken a light off white patina, matching the hands. All of the lume in the hands is stable. The case retains thick, evenly proportioned lugs and shows light wear. It is paired with a Rolex 7836 dating to '71 that will fit an approximate 7 inch wrist. This example comes accompanied with inner and outer boxes, two hang tags, catalogs, wallet and chronometer certification. It was also just fully serviced by True Patina in Oct of '25 and will be delivered with the service invoice. Finding top condition 1016s is surely becoming more difficult each year and we're truly thrilled to offer this piece to its next custodian.
