Rolex Speedking 4220 w/Salmon Dial - Very Rare

The origins of the Rolex Speedking are often traced to 1935, coinciding with Malcolm Campbell’s record-setting achievement when he became the first person to drive a car over 300 mph on the Bonneville Salt Slat while wearing a Rolex Oyster. Rolex did create a Campbell-associated model, the Rolex-Precision Campbell, and there was also a relatively obscure “Speed” model produced during the 1930s. However, Rolex’s contemporary advertising consistently referred to the watch Campbell wore simply as the “Rolex Oyster.” There is little convincing evidence to establish a direct connection between Campbell and the Speedking, and reliable documentation suggesting that the Speedking itself existed before approximately 1941 is difficult to find. 

This particular 294X serial example, dating to circa 1944, features a particularly rare and desirable pink/salmon dial. The dial displays even, attractive patina throughout, while the original radium Arabic numerals retain the vast majority of their lume—a remarkable detail for a watch of this age. The 30mm case shows honest signs of age and use, including some scuffing, most notably on the upper-left lug. These marks could be addressed with laser restoration if a future owner so chooses, though we appreciate the character they impart. The watch also retains its correct Brevet-signed crown. While the 30mm case wears on the smaller side, we’ve paired it with a vintage beads-of-rice bracelet to give the watch a sportier presence and make it particularly versatile for small to medium-sized wrists. Whether its work on the BOR or supplied Rolex strap/pin buckle, this is a remarkably beautiful and well-preserved vintage find, and one we’re thrilled to offer.

Dial: Is a very rare and desirable pink/salmon variant. It shows normal patina throughout and the radium Arabic indices still retain the large majority of their lume. Overall, it is stunning to behold and well preserved considering its age.

Bezel/insert: Is sharp with no notable wear.

Hands: Are matching and their lume is stable.

Case: Normal signs of use consistent with age. There are some scuffs particularly on the upper left lug but nothing that couldn't be removed with laser if anyone so chooses. Correct Brevet signed crown.

Bracelet: Is a vintage beads of rice which pairs perfectly and will fit an approximate 7 inch wrist.

Crystal: Clear.

Accessories: Extra Rolex strap and steel Rolex pin buckle.
