Benrus Type 1 Class A - w/Service Papers From True Patina - 1979

When thinking of the most iconic military watches ever produced, it would be hard not to place the Benrus Type 1 in the top 5 of the list (up there with the Rolex MilSub, Tornek-Rayville etc.) The unique and ergonomic asymmetrical case shape of these watches went on to influence later mil-spec pieces from the 70s to today. Perhaps most noteworthy is its pure and well laid out dial design, which we believe holds its own against the brilliance of the Rolex Explorer 1.
While we would absolutely love to say this ‘79 Benrus Type 1 is from the original owner, upon reflection it just wouldn’t be true. The truth is possibly more interesting!
This watch was purchased (and one other) from a naval supply officer. When watches would come in from the field, he would make a deal with the sailor it was issued to. He wouldn’t get into the specifics of the trades, but they were traded for.
We can’t comment on the legality of trading for, or the purchase of government property between sailors, but you can legally purchase this ‘79 Benrus Type 1 from us!
Special shout-out to Greg Petronzi @true_patina for servicing this!
Tech Specs:
Reference: MIL-W-50717 TYPE 1 CLASS A
Year of manufacture: 1979
Serial Number: 17XX
Dial: Very good dial with buttermilk-colored luminous plots and matching hands. A single, tiny spot can be seen next to the 1:00 marker. Macros available. Original crystal was too brittle to refit after service. A Lobtime service crystal has been fitted.
Bezel insert: Good Bezel insert with stabilized bubbling occurring between seven and eight, as well as the triangle at 12.
Case: Excellent case with light wear present throughout. Engraving on the case back is clear and perfectly legible. The original “dimple” crown is present. The original 6:00 fixed bar had been removed from the case, but was included with it when sold to me. It has been re-fitted and I am 100% confident it will stay in place.
Bracelet: Maratac single pass ZULU strap with titanium hardware.
Movement: Benrus caliber GS1D2 17-jewel. Based on ETA 2620.
Accessories: A piece of american history and service papers from True Patina
