The Santos Dumont's origins trace back to 1904, when Louis Cartier’s close friend, Alberto Santos-Dumont, needed a wristwatch for flying, as pocket watches proved impractical. By 1906, Santos-Dumont became the first person captured on film during a flight while wearing the iconic Cartier watch designed by Louis Cartier. The rest, as they say, is history. Of Cartier's many timepieces, the Santos is arguably one of the most recognizable models, alongside the Tank.

This example, ref. 78097 is circa 1970s, housed in 18k yellow gold and features a "Paris" signed dial. It has remained in very good vintage condition with a dial that presents well to the naked eye. There is a touch of wear in the far outer right portion but remains devoid of cracks. The case is also nice with thick, even lugs retaining deep hallmarks and markings on its back. The cabochon crown notably remains sharp, displaying minimal wear. It comes on a glossy gator Cartier strap in brown with 19k Cartier signed deployant and makes for a great option to wear and enjoy for years to come.

Dial: There is a touch of aging on the far right edge but it is not distracting. No cracking or crazing as found in most exampels of this era. Hands: Are matching. Case: Retains good proportions with thick and even lugs. Hallmarks and caseback markings are still crisp and clearly legible. Correct cabochon crown is still sharp with minimal wear. Bracelet: 18k Cartier deployant and Cartier strap in brown gator. Crystal: Has some small chips but presents well enough to the naked eye. It could be changed out at a later date without affecting value. Accessories: Genuine Cartier service pouch for storage and travel.
