Grand Seiko 56GS - Grey Linen/Kanji Dial - w/Box/Papers -1970s
- Unit price
- /per
The 56GS was the second most popular case variant from Grand Seiko’s past (61GS sold the most examples). This series of watches were produced in the Suwa Seikosha factory from 1970-1974 and feature the most striking, angular, and unapologetic Japanese design language from Grand Seiko’s archives. The 56GS was offered in the most diverse variety of case materials, dials, and three different movement options; no date, date, and day-date. The example here features the most advanced 5246A day-date movement combined with the most desirable blue/grey “8000” linen dial. We believe these linen dials all began their life vivid blue, but faded to an attractive grey over the past 50 years. These watches have a storied history of being so accurate that they forced Swiss manufacturers to end their annual timing-accuracy competitions, rather than potentially lose to Japanese watchmakers. This one still keeps accuracy to +/- 2 seconds per day, so it was probably best the Swiss went running for the Alps. Finding an example in unrestored condition, particularly with the delicate period-correct bracelet are genuinely rare and we are proud to offer it to a lucky collector.
Condition
Very well preserved dial showing the desirable Kanji date wheel. The case has honest wear throughout but shows sharp edges. There is a dent on the side near 9 o'clock but it isn't too severe. The bracelet in good shape showing light stretch and will fit up to 7 inch wrist. Period hands and signed crown. Rare package with box, papers and service records. The movement is running very well and comes with our 1-year mechanical warranty.
