The Patek Philippe Calatrava stands as a testament to one of the most esteemed watch designs from the 20th century, with its origins dating back to the 1930s, commencing with the iconic ref. 96. Today it remains what most collectors consider to be the archetype of a time-only dress watch. 

This particular Calatrava, ref. 1578J, circa 1950s is housed in 18k yellow gold. It features a stunning dial with sub-seconds, applied Arabic numerals at 3, 9 & 12 o-clock and leaf hands. The case boasts distinctive "spider lugs" which add unique character and at 35mm is best suited for medium to large wrists. This example has remained in stunning vintage condition with a dial/case that both appear untouched - notably this is very difficult to find in this era of production. The dial has honest signs of age with an exceptional raised enamel signature. The case shows stunning patina/oxidation throughout with crisp edges and a deep hallmark on its side. Dial: Appears untouched with no signs of cleaning which is extremely difficult to come by in examples of this era. The raised enamel signature is very prominent. Normal signs of wear consistent with age and no distracting blemishes. Hands: Are matching and well preserved. Case: Appears unpolished with stunning patina/oxidation throughout. The lugs remain well-defined and there is a crisp hallmark on its side. Correct unsigned crown. Crystal: Clear. Bracelet: Generic plated buckle and two piece leather strap in supple brown calf.
