The Patek Philippe Calatrava stands as a testament to one of the most esteemed watch designs from the 20th century, with its origins dating back to the 1930s, commencing with the iconic ref. 96. Today it remains what most collectors consider to be the archetype of a time-only dress watch.

The ref. 2551 is widely considered to be the next evolution of the legendary 2526 having been released shortly after in the '50s. Both utilized the landmark automatic cal. 12-600 AT which was Patek Philippe's first self-winding movement. Notably, the 2551 was designed to be a thinner, more refined alternative, featuring a slimmer screw-back and distinctive ridged lugs. With 2526 examples fetching important numbers in today's market, one might argue the 2551 offers good relative value. This example on offer is housed in yellow gold and bears a rare Gübelin signature from the historically significant Swiss retailer. This piece has remained in stunning vintage condition with a dial that appears untouched, showing crisp raised enamel and tight pearling. The case is also fantastic with thick, even lugs and strong lines. For the discerning collector, this double-signed timepiece comes with an extract from the archives, confirming its sale in '59 and a new old stock/sealed 18k Patek Philippe pin buckle.

Dial: Appears untouched and bears a rare Gübelin retailer signature. Phenomenally preserved with clean and crisp raised enamel signatures and tight pearling. The only visible age spot is near the sub-seconds. As with all macro photography it is much more apparent in the condition photos and not distracting to the naked eye. Hands: Are matching and well-preserved. Case: Excellent with thick, evenly proportioned lugs and no distracting wear. The sculpted case has retained strong lines which is key for this model. The crown is a service replacement. A "double P" crown could potentially be sourced through our network. Crystal: Clear. Bracelet: New old stock/sealed 18k Patek Philippe pin buckle. Two piece calf strap in honey brown. Accessories: Archive extract, service receipt from Patek, and Patek service pouch. The movement is running well on our timegrapher and comes with our 6-month mechanical warranty.
Year/era: 1959 Reference: 2551J Serial: 260XXX Dimensions: 35.5mm wide, 42mm lug to lug, 18mm lug width, 9mm tall. Movement: Automatic Patek Philippe caliber 12-600AT.
