The release of the ref. 3940 ('85) and 3970 ('86) was a bold move by Patek Philippe. At the time, the affect of the quartz crisis was still in full swing and the global economy was not in a healthy state. In a departure from tradition, Patek released the 3940 and sister 3970 in serial production, in contrast to the very tight production numbers of the 2499 and 1518. Both models would go on to arguably be Philippe Stern's greatest contribution to the brand and define how collectors view Patek Philippe today. It's hard to imagine a more beautiful set of complicated timepieces. With recent sales showing important figures for 1st and 2nd series examples the 3rd series remains a solid relative value in today's market.
This particular example, circa '94 is housed in the most noble of metals - platinum. It features a "3rd series" silvered dial with English calendar applied faceted batons and gold moonphase disc. Remaining in fantastic neo-vintage condition, this piece boasts a stunning case with well defined lugs showing deep, crisp hallmarks and light signs of use. The dial has a touch of wear at the bottom of the right sub-register, but its not distracting to the naked eye. It is very well-preserved overall for its age. Notably, this example retains its original warranty papers and both solid and display casebacks - these are non-replaceable parts of the set and a key component for many Patek collectors. An archive extract is also included to add to its provenance.
