Year/era: 2000
Reference: 16520
Serial: P19XXXX
Dimensions: 40mm wide, 20mm lug width.
Movement: Automatic Rolex caliber 4030.
The Daytona ref. 165XX marked a defining evolution of the model, becoming the first Daytona powered by a self-winding movement. Rolex's caliber 4030 was based on the legendary Zenith El Primero caliber 400—one of the world's first high-beat automatic chronograph movements—but was extensively reworked by Rolex for enhanced reliability and durability. Along with its sapphire crystal, larger case proportions, and refined bracelet, the "Zenith" Daytona bridged the gap between the vintage and modern eras, while preserving desirable vintage details such as brushed lug tops. Its success is widely credited with igniting the Daytona's meteoric rise in popularity, cementing it among the most sought-after vintage Rolex watches and leading to years-long waiting lists throughout the late 90s and early 2000s.
This P19X serial example, dating to circa 2000, represents the very final Zenith-powered Daytonas before the updated six-digit reference 116520 entered production. Interestingly, the P serial straddles both references, and while each is collectible in its own right, the Zenith-powered example is considerably more desirable given its exceptionally limited production. Collector estimates suggest that as few as 200–300 examples were produced. This watch shares the same transitional specification as the A-serial examples, featuring a Luminova dial and solid end-link (SEL) bracelet, but with far scarcer production, making it a particularly compelling collector piece.
Remaining in excellent neo-vintage condition, this Daytona features a clean black dial with beautifully patinated cream-colored sub-dials. The case remains strong, with thick, evenly proportioned lugs, attractive brushing, and crisp, well-defined edges. The bezel is notably sharp as well, showing minimal wear. It is fitted with the correct reference 78390A bracelet, complete with a matching AB date code. The bracelet exhibits medium stretch and retains a strong coronet on the clasp. Should the new owner wish, we have the resources to have it re-pinned to restore factory-tightness in the near future. It retains 13 links, fitting approximate 7.75-inch wrist. For the discerning collector, this example is offered as a complete set, including inner and outer boxes, with the outer box retaining its correct reference sticker, original warranty papers, serialized tag and wax tag, all booklets, paper wallet, calendar, and cloth.
Dial: Excellent and remains very glossy with no notable wear. The sub-dials have aged cleanly to an attractive "cream" patina.
Bezel/Insert: Remains very sharp and well peserved. There is minimal wear and nothing distracting to note of.
Hands: Are matching.
Case: Remains strong with thick, evenly proportioned lugs, nice brushed and very sharp edges. Light signs of use overall and a caseback sticker is still present. Correct signed crown.
Bracelet: Correct 78390A with matching AB date code. It has medium stretch with a strong coronet on the clasp. (We have resources to re-pin it to factory tightness in the near future if needed). It retains 13 links and will fit an approximate 7.75 inch wrist.
Crystal: Clear.
