The Daytona ref. 165XX marked a defining evolution of the model, becoming the first Daytona powered by a self-winding movement. Rolex's caliber 4030 was based on the legendary Zenith El Primero caliber 400—one of the world's first high-beat automatic chronograph movements—but was extensively reworked by Rolex for enhanced reliability and durability. Along with its sapphire crystal, larger case proportions, and refined bracelet, the "Zenith" Daytona bridged the gap between the vintage and modern eras, while preserving desirable vintage details such as brushed lug tops. Its success is widely credited with igniting the Daytona's meteoric rise in popularity, leading to years-long waiting lists throughout the late 90s and early 2000s.
Black dials like the one found on this example are especially prized for the rich patina that develops in the sub-dials over time. Offered here in exceptional neo-vintage condition, this piece features a mint dial with beautifully aged registers, an exceptionally sharp and unpolished case and bezel, and a very tight 12-link bracelet. Accompanying the watch is a true collector's full set, including inner and outer boxes (the outer box shows a correct reference sticker), warranty papers,Rolex Service Center documentation from '23, serialized and wax tag, all booklets, paper wallet, calendar, polishing cloth and bezel protector. As outstanding, complete examples become increasingly scarce, the opportunity to acquire one like this grows rarer with each passing year.
