The Rolex Explorer was first introduced in 1953 and quickly became associated with adventure, built around durability, reliability, and legibility in extreme conditions. Its simple balanced dial, luminous markers, and robust Oyster case made it one of Rolex’s purest tool watch designs. It leverages Rolex's patented Oyster case technology, which provides exceptional water resistance and dust protection. The Explorer has been worn on many notable expeditions and has become a symbol of Rolex's commitment to quality, earning it a top spot in the list of iconic models. The ref. 1016, produced '60 - '89, was the longest-running Explorer reference and remains highly coveted by collectors today.

On offer is a gorgeous 128X serial example, circa '67 which houses a glossy black gilt dial. Preserved in exceptional vintage condition, the dial has developed a highly attractive patina while retaining its glossy finish. The tritium markers have all taken a rich "golden-khaki" tone, lending the watch outstanding warmth and character. The case remains well-proportioned and the 6636/58 "stretch rivet" bracelet retains 11 links, displays light stretch and will fit an approximate 7.5 inch wrist. For anyone seeking a remarkable 1016, this example would make for a cornerstone piece in collections of all levels. 

Dial: Fantastic with all luminous tritium plots aged cleanly to a highly attractive "golden khaki" hue. The dial has retained a nice glossy finish with very light matting. There is a touch of lume loss in the 8 o-clock plot and a very light mark under the Explorer logo but neither are distracting to the naked eye. Overall, it is highly well preserved compared to the vast majority of gilt dials of this era. Bezel: Remains sharp with normal signs of use consistent with age. Hands: Are correct, they have been professionally color matched exactly to the dial. Case: Retains nice proportions and shows minimal wear. The ref. and serial numbers are still clearly visible and there is no notable oxidation to note of. Correct signed crown. Bracelet: Is a very desirable and correct 6636/58 "stretch rivet" variant dated '65. It displays light stretch, retains 11 links and shows a strong coronet on the clasp. It will fit an approximate 7.5 inch wrist. Crystal: Is a new True Dome for added piece of mind and clarity to enjoy the dial.
