The Rolex Explorer was first introduced in 1953 and quickly became associated with adventure, built around durability, reliability, and legibility in extreme conditions. Its simple balanced dial, luminous markers, and robust Oyster case made it one of Rolex’s purest tool watch designs. It leverages Rolex's patented Oyster case technology, which provides exceptional water resistance and dust protection. The Explorer has been worn on many notable expeditions and has become a symbol of Rolex's commitment to quality, earning it a top spot in the list of Rolex's iconic models. The ref. 1016, produced '60 - '89, was the longest-running Explorer reference and remains highly coveted by collectors today.

This particular R84X serial example, produced circa '89 during the final year of the reference’s production, is accompanied by what can only be described as a dream collector’s set. For those who appreciate a slightly more modern execution of the 1016, the “R-series” represents the latest possible iteration while still retaining the charm of a matte dial configuration. The watch itself remains in excellent vintage condition, highlighted by a truly mint “eggshell” matte dial with beautifully even patina that matches the hands perfectly. The case shows only minimal signs of polishing, retaining thick, symmetrical lugs and attractive brushing throughout. For the discerning collector, the set is exceptionally complete, including the original warranty papers, serialized hang tag, and even the original purchase receipt — details that are seldom seen together today and that will only become more desirable as time passes. Dial: Is a spectacular and completely mint under magnification. All of the tritium plots have aged cleanly to a nice "eggshell" patina, matching the hands. Bezel: Sharp with light wear. Hands: Are matching and their lume is devoid of cracking. Case: Has seen minimal polishing in the past. The lugs remain thick, evenly proportioned and retain nice brushing. Light signs of use overall. Correct signed crown. Bracelet: Correct 78360/580 solid link with I date code. It remains tight, retains 12 links, shows a nice coronet and will fit an approximate 7.5 inch wrist. Crystal: Clear. Accessories: Inner and outer boxes, warranty papers, original purchase receipt, serialized and wax hang tags, oyster booklet, paper wallet and cloth. The movement is running well on our timegrapher and comes with our 6-month mechanical warranty.
