The Rolex Explorer was first introduced in 1953 and is notable for its association with adventure. The design emphasizes durability, reliability, and legibility in extreme conditions. The ref. 1016 was the longest running in the model line ('60-'89) and is coveted by collectors today for its pure design. Of all vintage Rolex, it might just be their most beautiful no-frills creation. 

This particular 415X serial example, circa 1977 features an incredibly well-preserved mk4 dial that has taken a warm, "pumpkin" patina. The hands also contain their original tritium lume and are slightly darker but match the dial well. There is some degradation in the hour hand that can either be preserved with stabilization or we can offer resources to color match the hands at the request of the next custodian. The case shows normal signs of wear consistent with age and the lugs remains thick and even. The bracelet has a matching VB date code, displays light stretch, a strong coronet on its clasp and will fit an approximate 7.5 inch wrist. For any collector who prefers "barn find" type examples, this 1016 is as honest and beautiful as one could hope for.

Dial: Is a mk4 variant which is correct for the serial range. I remains in mint condition with no notable wear under magnificaiton. All of the tritium plots have taken a stunning "pumpkin" patina, making this a striking and standout example. All of the plots have aged evenly and cleanly. Bezel: No distracting wear and remains sharp. Hands: Are matching and contain their original tritium lume. There is some degradation in the hour hand. We have resourced to stabilize them or color match them depending on preference of the next owner. Case: Remains strong with very thick and even lugs. Honest signs of use consistent with age. There are some tool marks on the back that could be cleaned up with some laser/polishing if the next owner so chooses. Correct signed crown. Bracelet: Is a matching date code of VB. Honest signs of use and a strong coronet on the clasp. Displays light stretch, retains 12 links and will fit an approximate 7.5 inch wrist. Crystal: Clear.
