The Rolex Explorer is a line of watches that was first introduced in 1953. The Explorer is notable for its association with exploration and adventure, with a design that emphasizes durability, reliability, and legibility in extreme conditions. It features a beautifully simple, balanced, no-nonsense design, with a clear and easy-to-read dial, luminous hour markers, and a robust stainless steel case. The watch is also equipped with Rolex's patented Oyster case, which provides exceptional water resistance and protection from dust and other environmental hazards.

The watch was famously worn by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay during their ascent of Mount Everest in 1953, solidifying its reputation as a watch for adventurers and explorers. Since then, the Explorer has been worn on numerous expeditions and adventures, both on and off the beaten path. The Explorer has become a symbol of Rolex's commitment to quality and reliability in extreme conditions, and has earned a top spot in the list of Rolex's iconic models.

First released in 1989, the reference 14270 was a modernized update to the reference 1016, being the first Explorer 1 to feature a glossy dial and sapphire crystal. Collectors who prefer a slightly more vintage look and feel know that these 5 digit Explorers are difficult to find with a "holes case," which undoubtedly has a more vintage aesthetic, not to speak of ease of use for quick strap changes. This particular S serial piece, circa 1993 is early enough in the production run to feature just that, and some nicely aged tritium patina to boot. This piece remains in excellent vintage condition with an unpolished case/bracelet and if you've been hunting for a top example, don't overlook this stunning piece!

Dial: Excellent with all of its tritium lume aged to an even light off-white color. There is a little bit of patina on the dial that is not easily discernible to the naked eye but under a loupe. This is common to see on this era of Explorer 1 gloss dial and not distracting. Bezel: Very sharp and no marks to note of. Hands: No issues. Case: Appears completely unpolished with sharp lug holes. There is a small dent on one of the outer edges of the case visible in photography. Overall, light signs of use consistent with age. Correct signed crown. Bracelet: May have been very lightly touched up and there is a small dent on one of the links. Correct with 12 links and minimal stretch. Crystal: Clear. Accessories: The perfect adventure companion with access to quick strap changes. The movement is running well on our timegrapher and comes with our 1-year mechanical warranty.
Year/era: 1993 Reference: 14270 Serial: S42XXXX Dimensions: 36mm wide, 20mm lug width. Movement: Automatic Rolex caliber 3130.
