Introduced in 1953, the Rolex Explorer was developed as a rugged tool watch emphasizing legibility, durability, and reliability in extreme environments, featuring a simple luminous dial and Rolex’s Oyster case for water and dust resistance. In the early 1970s, Rolex expanded the line with the Rolex Explorer II ref. 1655, designed for cave explorers who relied on its fixed 24-hour display to distinguish day from night. Nicknamed the “Freccione” (“big arrow”) for its oversized 24-hour hand, the watch is often mistakenly linked to Steve McQueen despite no evidence he wore one. Though initially a slow seller, the 1655 has since gained a strong cult following for its distinctive design.

This example, circa '81 has remained in wonderful vintage condition. The dial is excellent with cleanly aged tritium plots that are all present and full. They have taken a warm "khaki" patina throughout, matching the hands. The case is also strong with light signs of wear. The lugs are very thick, even and show sharp chamfers/lug holes. It is fitted to a correct hollow link Oyster bracelet with matching date code. It displays very light stretch and retains 12 links, fitting an approximate 7.25 inch wrist.
