Rolex Explorer II 16570 w/Vivid Patina - *Unpolished*
- Unit price
- /per
The Explorer model line has its history rooted in adventure. The Explorer 1 was first marketed as a watch for mountaineers during the 1950s. It wasn't until the 1970s that the Explorer II was launched for spelunking, otherwise known as cave exploration. Not only did the watch have to be robust and waterproof, it featured a 24 hour hand that could easily help cavers decipher between day and night as they moved through pitch black caves, on some occasions with moving ocean tides. This is a very interesting piece of history to uncover and undoubtedly makes these Explorer IIs unique conversation pieces.
While most of the discussion around Explorer II is regarding the "polar" white dial variants, we could argue that the black dial variant represents a huge value in the sport model lineup. They trade for well under a GMT, yet feature roughly the same dimensions and offer the same addition of a GMT complication. This example on offer comes from circa 1990. It boasts gorgeous tritium patina and an unpolished case/bracelet. If you've been looking for a well-priced neo-vintage Rolex, this 16750 should not be overlooked.
