Rolex Submariner 5513 "Meters First" w/Box/Military Papers - 1967
- Unit price
- /per
The reference 5513 Submariner was introduced in 1962 and was produced all the way until 1990. Throughout these decades, historically important figures like Steve McQueen, John Mayer and David Beckham amongst countless others were documented wearing this iconic reference. It of course evolved through different variations over time, however, the overall design language of the “no date” and “two line” dial remained consistent and highly pleasing to the eyes of anyone who appreciates a no frill, simple and symmetrical design. Many collectors would agree that the early matte dial variants are amongst the most beautiful of all, which brings us to this particular example.
On offer is a “meters first” dial variant, circa 1967. The watch features a “long 5” bezel insert with “fat font,” a beautiful and comfortable rivet bracelet and a truly stunning dial with warm and evenly aged lume plots. Perhaps most exciting are the U.S. Naval Supply Depot papers from Yokosuka, Japan, dated to January of 1969. Seeing exactly where this watch came from and having its original box, booklet and tag is a wonderful package for the most discerning of collectors.
CONDITION REPORT
Dial: Excellent “meters first” with no notable blemishes under magnification. The tritium lume has aged to a gorgeous matching parchment color, is very puffy and all present.
Bezel insert: The “long 5” shows fantastic overall preservation with very light scuffs or marks. The pip is a service replacement but matches the lume nicely.
Hands: Are matching. Most of the tritium remains in the hour hand. The minute hand has some degradation. The next owner could have the hands stabilized and/or color matched to the dial, elevating value of the piece overall.
Case: Appears to have been polished previously but remains fairly thick and displays some of the original chamfers. Honest signs of use consistent with age. Correct signed crown.
Bracelet: Correct 7206 with 12 links. Appears to have been professionally rebuilt at some point and lightly polished during service. It has very light stretch as a result.
Crystal: Is a True Dome service replacement. The watch comes with its original crystal which has been set aside.
