Tudor Submariner 7016 "Snowflake"
- Unit price
- /per
The Tudor Submariner or "Snowflake" as its affectionately referred to by collectors was first seen in '68 with the ref. 7016/0 (no date), helping the brand set a new path from Rolex. The ref. 7021/0 (date) version arrived at the same time, proceeding the ref. 9401/0 (no date) and 9411/0 (date) which came in early to mid 70s. The nickname came from their distinctive squared indices and "Snowflake" like hour/seconds hands. This additional luminous material aided it in being a highly capable tool watch that we now know today has well-documented military use being issued to the French Marine Nationale and other countries' armed forces. Out of all the vintage tool watches the "Snowflake" is one of our absolute favorite choices for its distinctive design and special aura that nice examples can convey.
This particular black example, circa '71 is a more desirable "no date" variant and remains in nice vintage condition. Notably, these early "Snowflakes," especially the ref. 7016 suffered from dial bubbling so it is more difficult to find one in the state we have here which is smooth and free of distracting wear. The hands have been redone in the past and the insert is a "long 5" from an earlier watch but still genuine and pairs with the watch well - the pip was replaced in service. The case remains thick and the Tudor folded link bracelet shows light stretch and will fit an approximate 7 inch wrist. This piece has been fitted with a True Dome crystal for added protection and clarity. For anyone who wants a "Snowflake" to wear as a daily driver these pieces are some of the best vintage watches for various nato straps and this particular piece would make for a great opportunity to wear and enjoy properly in the field.
